UNICORNS AT THE OPERA

PLAYLIST: "UNICORNS AT THE OPERA” LINK

Dear Croissant,

Today, Sunday, without exaggeration, I bring you the Living For Breakfast edition that I have enjoyed drawing the most in my entire life. So much so, that I’m finding it hard to write; I just want to publish the drawings. I guess that’s how it should be—I’m an illustrator, my thing is drawing, so I’ll let the characters speak for me: Unicorns, UNICORNS, BEAUTIFUL UNICORNS. Today we close a little trilogy of fantastic beings wandering around Paris: Dragons, mermaids, and today, unicorns. In this series...

MY TRIBE IS THE UNICORNS

I’m one of those people who believes you attract your tribe, and this 2026 I can finally stop searching: my tribe is the unicorns. Imaginary, rare, magical, beautiful, contemplated from afar, noble, peaceful, possessing the ultimate beauty of creation simply by existing. Unicorns are hard to find, just like a good friend. While drawing this article, I couldn't stop thinking about fulfilling dreams and the friends who have helped me. I’ve returned to Paris, and now I have my own apartment—temporary, but mine, mine, mine—thanks to these friends who pushed me into the deep end of the pool, without water in it.

THE STORY: IT ALL STARTED ON A ROAD TRIP TO PARTY IN VALENCIA

Let’s go back in time to March 2026. I moved to Madrid for love, September 2025, and love abandoned me in October. I was stuck in a city with a job and a life that didn't belong to me. In February, I quit the job I had in a shop, and in March, I went on a weekend road trip from Madrid to Valencia—our homeland—with my childhood friend Divina (Divine, you can't get a more unicorn name than that) to enjoy the local festivities, Las Fallas. As we approached our destination, you could see the city in the distance and sense the sea. I rolled down the window: humidity, the smell of the sea, home.

Me: "I’m dreaming hard about giving up the Madrid apartment and moving back to Valencia or Paris."

Divina: "I’m free in two weekends, we can do the move then if you want."

Me: "WHAT?!

DREAMING UNICORNS

This comic strip was inspired by Divina and her family, and it's about a little donkey who dreams of being a unicorn.

Andreu: "Mom, do you think I can be a unicorn?"

Davinia: "Of course, my love, in this life you can be anything you set your mind to. Look at your uncle Marcos; when he was little, he wanted to be a butterfly, and now he has a very successful Drag show."

Uncle Marcos: "The good thing about starting Drag while being married to a woman is that you can ask her for lingerie advice. Now she's the one asking me for makeup tips."

THE STORY: A DAY LATER, OVER MATCHA TEA

By magical coincidence, M Isabel—another childhood friend with whom Divina and I used to play in the music band and do theater together, including The Magic Flute opera—was coming to Valencia for a few days. She lives in Viena & she is Opera Singers at the Vienna’s Opera. It was Sunday, and her plane was landing in Manises. Meanwhile at downtown, at Dulce de Leche behind La Finca Roja, I was ordering her a matcha tea, her favorite, so it would be ready when she arrived. I told her about my sudden decision to move, and she said:

M Isabel: "Don't come back to Valencia, go back to Paris. Vincent is already there, and you’ve already done everything you had to do here."

Me (crying): "But is this really happening? Am I going back to Paris?"

M Isabel: "You are going back to Paris."

(An embrace, and imaginary applause from everyone in the café).

I bought my ticket to Paris for March 19th, the day they burn Las Fallas in Valencia. It’s a ritual of change, saying goodbye to winter and welcoming life and spring. Las Fallas are monuments that burn away everything bad, everything we dislike about society, to make room for change and renewal. That day there was a new moon—could there be any more signs?

THE STORY: UNICORNS IN PARIS

While I was drawing this article, another real-life unicorn showed up in Paris: Richard Haines. Many years ago, when I met Richard here in Paris, talking about the artist's life, I told him: "I have the feeling people expect me to be a unicorn, and when they meet me, they just see someone normal." Richard told me: "We are unicorns, you must act like one." So, back in the time, I made this drawing for him.

EXPO: UNICORNS AT THE CLUNY MUSEUM

A museum to literally lose your head over—you can ask the kings and saints who used to hang on the walls of Notre Dame many years ago. Recently, I went to the unicorn exhibition at the Cluny Museum of Medieval Art. It’s a very old institution, dating back to the 19th century, and it already had millions of visitors when it first opened back then. I hadn't been until now…
